Chin-Chuan Chang

Pianist Dr. Chin-Chuan Chang is currently the Dean of the College of Humanities and Arts at the National Taipei University of Education. He was the First Prize winner of the “Franz Liszt” International Piano Competition in Los Angeles in Category C (ages 17-32) and also received the Best Etude Prize.

Dr. Chang began his piano studies with his father and later studied with Professor Francis Wu in Taiwan. As a child, he was selected as one of the students in the “Gifted Child Program” of the Ministry of Education of Taiwan to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, Spain. He was a prizewinner in the National Kawai Piano Competition and also won First Prize at the National Taiwan Piano Competition in both the Children and Youth categories. At the age of 14, he entered the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, where he studied with Professor Fernando Puchol. He was selected by the “Juan March” Foundation as one of the young pianists to tour Europe. He later graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid with the highest honor.

In 1990, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where he studied with Professor Solomon Mikowsky and Professor Donn-Alexandre Feder. During his time in New York, he won First Prize at the Manhattan School of Music Concerto Competition, as well as several other concerto competitions, including the Manhattanville Symphony Concerto Competition and the Bergen Philharmonic Concerto Competition. After earning his Master of Music degree in 1993 from the Manhattan School of Music, he was awarded an assistantship and a full scholarship at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where he studied with Professor William Black.

In 2000, he obtained the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts and returned to Taiwan. He has performed as a soloist with several orchestras and has performed extensively throughout Taiwan, China, other Asian countries, and Europe. He also conducts master classes worldwide, including the 2010-2020 “Paris International Summer Sessions” by The Fondation Bell’Arte in France, the “Forum Internacional de Música de Orihuela” in Spain, and the “Forum Internacional de Música de Torrelodones” in Spain. Currently, he is not only a professor at the National Taipei University of Education, but also an artist-in-residence with the Fortune Art Enterprise Agency.

Dr. Chang’s students have participated in many international piano competitions, including the “Chopin” competition in Poland, the “Tchaikovsky” competition in Moscow, and the “Schumann” competition in Leipzig, among others. He served as the director of the “NTUE” International Piano Festival from 2016 to 2020 and has been the director of the “NTUE” International Arts Festival since 2020. In 2024, he was awarded the “Arts Education Contribution Award” by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan.
